Drøbak is a town along the Oslofjord about 30 km (18 miles) south of Oslo, where you will find the Oscarsborg Castle. The location at the narrowest point on the fjord made it ideal for defensive purposes and a fortress was here even during Christian IV’s regime in the 17th century. In the mid-19th century, Sweden-Norway decided that a new modern fortress was needed to defend the city and the Oscarsborg Castle, named after the union king, was completed in the 1850s. The castle played a crucial role in 1940 when the Norwegians sank the German warship Blücher, which gave Norway some breathing room in the Second World War. Since the war, the castle has not been needed for defense and is now mostly a destination for excursions. Oscarsborg is open to the public all year and, if you visit in the summer, there are often concerts and other events offered. You can get to Drøbak from Oslo, either by taking the boat that departs from Aker Brygge in the summer once a day during weekdays, or by taking the bus from the bus terminal, which leaves almost hourly year-round.
